Beauty and Power are Woven Into Iconic Hair Structures by Laetitia Ky

Ivorian artist Laetitia Ky creates thought-provoking hair sculptures that embody African identity and promote activism. As a child Ky transformed her Barbie dolls’ straight strands into curly extensions that resembled her own hair. As Laetitia later immersed herself in the online natural hair community, she found inspiration in pre-colonial African hairstyles and began experimenting with her own hair.

The artist and designer has used her platform to spark conversations around issues such as gender inequality, racial oppression, harmful beauty standards, and mental health stigmas. Her art serves as a catalyst for change, inspiring others to join her in the fight for social justice and the celebration of Black beauty.
